Speaker Carmelo Abela Meets Ambassadors Of Slovak Republic & Kingdom Of The Netherlands

Speaker of the House of Representatives Carmelo Abela held meetings with the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Malta, Peter Kmec, and the newly appointed Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Malta, Anke J. ter Hoeve-van Heek, at the Parliament of Malta.

During his meeting with Ambassador Kmec, Speaker Abela highlighted the importance of further strengthening Malta–Slovakia relations through closer parliamentary cooperation. He noted the potential for increased exchanges between the Maltese Parliament and the National Council of the Slovak Republic, including cooperation between parliamentary committees and friendship groups, as well as the sharing of experience in parliamentary procedures, legislative scrutiny and European affairs.

The discussions also addressed the political and parliamentary situations in both countries, as well as the challenges linked to irregular migration. The two sides also exchanged views on the importance of exploring regular migration pathways that can support economic needs.

During the meeting with Ambassador ter Hoeve-van Heek, the Speaker noted that this year marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malta and the Netherlands. He stressed the importance of continued contact between both Parliaments, including cooperation on shared issues and the exchange of good practices.

Speaker Abela also emphasised the role of parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue in responding to regional and international challenges, particularly by creating opportunities for peaceful solutions. The meetings also focused on strengthening bilateral relations ahead of Malta’s and the Netherlands’ upcoming Presidencies of the Council of the European Union.
