The strength of Malta lies in the dignity of its people, said Speaker of the House of Representatives, Anġlu Farrugia, this morning as he opened the national conference “Forward with Dignity” at the Parliament of Malta. The event was a reflective gathering and a direct dialogue with the public on the fundamental values of Maltese society.

In his speech, Speaker Farrugia emphasised that this was not a routine parliamentary meeting, but a moment to reflect on where Malta stands, where it wishes to go, and above all, how every individual can live a life of dignity.

The Speaker recognised the valuable work of Ivan Bartolo, noting that it demonstrates a genuine sense of humanity in politics. He contrasted countries that measure human worth by wealth with those that place people at the centre of society.

“In Malta, we can take pride that even those without financial means receive care. This is the highest form of social justice,” he said.

Reflecting on the international context, Speaker Farrugia mentioned the plight of children in Gaza, families in Ukraine, and communities across Africa. He stressed that witnessing such suffering strengthens the need for solidarity not only with each other but with humanity as a whole. He also highlighted local challenges, such as poverty, drug issues, housing, and the reintegration of prisoners, emphasising that politics must address the root causes of problems, not just their symptoms.

In his closing remarks, Speaker Farrugia stated, “Forward with Dignity’ is not a dream it is both a duty and a challenge.” He called for courage, unity, and respect for all people in every sphere of public life. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, he reminded attendees that the true measure of a society lies in how it treats its most vulnerable members. He concluded by inviting the public to work together to build a future of hope and solidarity for all.

The conference also featured contributions from Opposition Leader Alex Borg, Katya De Giovanni, and several other speakers.
