A Japanese national who admitted to killing cats in Sliema has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and fined €15,000.

Okamura Satoshi was also banned from keeping animals or residing in places where animals are kept for 40 years.

Times of Malta reported that the court issued a three-year restraining order in favour of two police officers he slightly injured during his arrest and imposed an 18-month treatment order.

The judgment was handed down by Magistrate Kevan Azzopardi after the Court of Criminal Appeal annulled a previous sentence.

CCTV footage showed him violently attacking a sleeping cat, and the court expressed concern over his stated motives, including comparing cats to women in a statement linking violence to perceived lack of appreciation.

The magistrate noted that an early guilty plea would not justify excessive leniency, particularly given the strong evidence.

Satoshi’s time in custody will be deducted from his sentence. The fine is payable in €1,000 monthly instalments, with the full amount due if payments are missed. Police inspector Elliot Magro prosecuted the case.
