Six Reportedly Injured After Birżebbuġa Crash Involving Prison Van

Six people were reportedly taken to Mater Dei Hospital after a head-on collision involving a prison van and another commercial vehicle on Triq Ħal Far in Birżebbuġa on Wednesday afternoon.
The accident happened at around 2.45pm, when police were informed of a collision between a Renault Trafic prison van, used to transport people to and from the Correctional Facility at Kordin, and an Isuzu Elf 250 van. The impact caused the Isuzu van to overturn onto its side.
The prison van was being driven by a 57-year-old man from Birżebbuġa and was carrying seven passengers.
The passengers included four Maltese men aged 45, 51, 38 and 60, together with a 26-year-old Syrian man and a 36-year-old Nigerian man. The Isuzu van was being driven by a 46-year-old man from Ħaż Żebbuġ.
Following the collision, both drivers and four passengers were taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment. Those injured included two Maltese passengers, the Syrian passenger and another passenger travelling in the prison van.
The medical condition of all six injured people is still pending assessment by hospital staff.
The collision led to the temporary closure of both carriageways of Triq Ħal Far while emergency services attended the scene, assisted those involved and cleared the roadway.
