Six Italian nationals were arrested at Malta International Airport on Friday evening in connection with an incident of car vandalism in Swieqi the previous night.

The arrests follow an investigation into damage caused to several vehicles belonging to residents in the area.

Swieqi Deputy Mayor Jordan Galea Pace had taken to social media to reveal that four vehicles belonging to four different residents and families were damaged during the incident.

CCTV footage captured a group of men walking through a residential street in Swieqi. In the footage, one of the men appears to strike the side-view mirror of a parked car before the group continues walking down the road.

Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield confirmed the arrests, while stressing that investigations are still ongoing to establish who was responsible for the vandalism.

Bedingfield praised the work of the Swieqi Community Police Team, whose efforts contributed to the identification of the individuals. He also thanked residents and a short-let operator for cooperating with the authorities during the investigation.

Galea Pace similarly welcomed the arrests and thanked those who assisted in identifying the group.

“Welcome to Swieqi, as long as you respect the residents, their property and our laws,” Galea Pace said.

Investigations into the latest case remain ongoing.
