Former Nationalist Party leader Simon Busuttil has been appointed a director within the administration of the European Parliament, becoming the first Maltese national to join the institution’s senior management since Malta’s EU accession in 2004.

His appointment follows the completion of a five-year term as secretary-general of the European People’s Party (EPP), the largest political group in the parliament.

In his new role, Busuttil will oversee operational planning within DG LINC, the directorate responsible for logistics, interpretation and conferences across the institution.

As director, he will report to one of the parliament’s 16 director-generals, who in turn report to the secretary-general, Alessandro Chiocchetti. Chiocchetti previously served as head of cabinet to Roberta Metsola, Malta’s MEP and the current President of the European Parliament.

PN Leader Alex Borg congratulated Busuttil, thanking him for his continuous work. PN MEPs Peter and David Casa also congratulated Busuttil for his new appointment.
