A cute little shrew was rescued from Għajnsielem, Gozo last week after he was found in the middle of a road surrounded by cats.

A volunteer of Nature Trust Wildlife Rescue Team Malta checked if the shrew did not have any injuries and was released in a safer area.

‘Shrews are NOT mice and are not considered pests as they do not eat human foods. Shrews play a vital role in the ecosystem as they eat a large volume of insects.’

Interestingly, this is a Sicilian Shrew, which is endemic to Sicily and Gozo, not even Malta!

All the animals rescued by Nature Trust are protected species and it is illegal in Malta to harm them or keep them as pets.
