Shadow Ministers Carabott And Borg Drive PN Bid For Constitutional Right To A Healthy Environment

The Nationalist Party has announced it will table a Private Member’s Bill in Parliament to enshrine the right to a clean and healthy environment in Malta’s Constitution.
At a press conference, Shadow Minister for Home Affairs and Security Darren Carabott – who drafted the Bill – and Shadow Minister for the Environment Rebekah Borg, speaking under the PN’s new leadership, said the party aims to guarantee every Maltese and Gozitan citizen protection from threats such as pollution, excessive waste, lack of green spaces and slow investment in renewable energy.
They stressed that the Bill, which has already gained the support of several organisations, would make governments legally accountable if this right is not upheld, placing environmental protection on the same level as the rights to life and health.
With over 100 countries already recognising the environment as a fundamental right in their constitutions, the PN said Malta must now follow suit and “send a clear signal of a country looking to the future.”
