Sixty eight members of the Civil Protection Department have been recognised for 25 or 30 years of service to the Maltese and Gozitan people during a ceremony at which they were awarded medals for long and efficient service.

The ceremony was presided over by the Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment, Byron Camilleri, who said he strongly believes in marking such occasions because those being honoured have dedicated their lives to serving others.

He described civil protection as a noble vocation that consistently strengthens society, highlighting the commitment shown by officers who report for duty every day without knowing what emergencies they may face.

Minister Camilleri referred to the wide range of incidents handled by the department, from major and seasonal fires to serious accidents and rescue operations. He also recalled the role played by the Civil Protection Department during the pandemic, stating that officers were always ready to assist wherever needed in order to save lives during a period of great uncertainty.

The minister added that recognition ceremonies must be supported by tangible investment.

He outlined measures introduced by government, including union representation, service recognition, a sectoral agreement, improved protective equipment, modern vehicles, upgraded stations, incentives for long serving officers and increased investment in human resources.

The Director General of the Civil Protection Department, Peter Paul Coleiro, said the ceremony honoured decades of dedication by officers who consistently run towards danger when others move away. A parade was also held in St George’s Square to mark 25 years of service by the department.
