September Is Suicide Prevention Month
Local

September marks Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness, challenge the stigma surrounding mental health and remind people that asking for help is a sign of strength.

Behind every statistic is a person, a family, a friend and a story.

Mental health struggles are not always visible, and someone who appears fine on the outside may be facing difficulties that others are unaware of.

That is why checking in matters.

A simple “How are you, really?” can create an opportunity for someone to open up and seek the support they need. Listening without judgement, taking concerns seriously and encouraging professional help can make a meaningful difference.

Suicide prevention requires ongoing commitment throughout the year. It means creating a society where people feel safe speaking about anxiety, depression, loneliness and emotional distress without fear of being judged.

You do not need to have all the answers to support someone. Sometimes, being present, listening and helping a person access the right support is enough.

If you are struggling, remember that you do not have to face it alone. Speak to someone you trust, reach out for professional support and ask for help.

This September, take a moment to check in on those around you. One conversation can make a difference.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out and seek professional help. Call 179 or reach out to organisations like Richmond Foundation for assistance.
