Senglea Local Council To Host Unique Cultural Experience In Heart Of Locality
Local

Through Cultural Region 2026, the Harbour Region, in collaboration with the Senglea Local Council, the Fgura Scouts, and the Directorate for Human Rights, will organize a cultural event entitled “Ħġejjeġ” on 27 June, from 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., as a celebration of Senglea’s historical, cultural, and community heritage.

Through a contemporary interpretation of an ancient tradition associated with the ħġejjeġ, the event will transform several historic areas of Senglea into a cultural route featuring eight different locations, where musical performances by local artists will take place. Each location will be marked by a traditional bonfire, while an interactive map will guide the public from one site to another.

Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli said that this initiative is a clear example of how cultural heritage can be brought to life through collaboration between local councils, local entities, and the community.

She argued that "this project not only preserves an important tradition linked to Senglea and the Harbour Region, but also creates an inclusive space where families, artists, and visitors can come together in a unique cultural experience. I encourage the public to attend and be part of this celebration of our identity and heritage.”

The event will culminate at Fort St Michael, where the final bonfire will be lit and a short documentary will be shown, focusing on the history and significance of the Ħġejjeġ tradition in Senglea and the Harbour Region.

Senglea Mayor Clive Pulis explained that visitors will also be able to enjoy a free tourist train service that will continuously circulate between all event locations while providing information about Senglea’s history and heritage.

Workshops related to food, music, and cultural storytelling will also be organized, for which advance registration is required.

Artistic Director Joseph Galea said that these events are not solely artistic in purpose; they go beyond that by placing culture at the heart of the community and bringing it closer to people, thereby increasing accessibility to culture. He added that these initiatives also aim to strengthen awareness of the localities in which they are held.

The public is invited to attend and explore the full programme of activities. Registration is required for all workshops.
