SEED Project To Improve Early Pregnancy Care

The Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, has launched the SEED project (Study of Early Events in Development), a three year national research initiative aimed at improving knowledge and care during the first trimester of pregnancy in Malta.
The SEED project is intended to strengthen more informed and patient centred care by improving understanding of early pregnancy outcomes. It brings together the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Malta, in collaboration with Mater Dei Hospital. The project will establish a modern national database in this field, combining clinical hospital data with insights from the lived experiences of women and healthcare professionals.
During the launch, Keith Azzopardi Tanti said the initiative aligns with Malta Vision 2050, which aims to ensure that research leads to practical solutions for society. He explained that the findings will support better planning of services and help develop a healthcare system that can adapt to changing needs while improving quality of life for patients and families.
Principal researcher Dr Lara Sammut highlighted the importance of the study for the local health sector. She said the early stages of pregnancy remain an area where uncertainty is high and evidence is limited. She stressed that building a strong evidence base is essential for improving decision making and care during this critical period.

The SEED project reflects a broader effort to ensure that national research informs policy in a meaningful way. It focuses on both clinical outcomes and human experience, aiming to improve care in vulnerable moments. The Government said the investment demonstrates its commitment to supporting families and healthcare professionals while strengthening patient centred services in Malta.
