Second Malta–Sicily Interconnector Advances as Subsea Cable Nears Installation Phase

A major milestone has been reached in the Malta–Sicily Interconnector 2 project with the completion of manufacturing, testing, and preparation for installation of a 103km subsea cable. The development marks a significant step forward in strengthening Malta’s electricity interconnection with mainland Europe and advancing its energy transition objectives.
The high-voltage cable was manufactured at Nexans’ facility in Charleston, USA, over a year-long production process. It involved stages including fibre optic production in Norway, copper conductor formation, insulation, sheathing, assembly of phases, and integration of fibre optics and fillers. The cable was produced in approximately 10km sections, later jointed into two main lengths, and subjected to comprehensive factory testing to ensure performance, reliability, and technical compliance.
Following successful testing, the cable has been spooled onto a dedicated carousel in preparation for loading onto the cable-laying vessel Nexans Electra, which will undertake installation works later this year. Preparatory marine route clearance has also been completed, ensuring a safe and unobstructed corridor for subsea operations. These developments pave the way for the project’s next critical phase.
The €300 million project is supported by European Regional Development Fund financing and is classified as an Operation of Strategic Importance. It is set to strengthen energy security, support renewable integration, and advance Malta’s long-term sustainability goals.
