Second Edition Of The Gozo International Puppet Festival Set To Delight Għarb

Minister for Gozo and Planning, Clint Camilleri, has announced that the second edition of the Gozo International Puppet Festival will take place on 26th, 27th, and 28th September 2025 at the Piazzetta of the Madonna Visit, in Għarb. This unique festival brings together art, creativity, and entertainment for the whole family in the heart of Għarb.

This year, the festival promises an even more vibrant experience with a variety of shows and activities: giant puppets, traditional marionettes, and family-friendly workshops that bring fascinating stories to life. Talented artists from Malta and abroad will participate, creating a rich cultural experience appealing to visitors of all ages.
One of the main highlights of this edition is Żgugina, a six-metre-tall giant who revives the legend of Saint Demetrius of Għarb. Żgugina was entirely handcrafted by Maltese and Gozitan artists, craftsmen, and volunteers, transforming a local legend into a community-made icon.
Minister Camilleri said, “This year’s festival clearly demonstrates that Gozo is a vibrant hub of art and culture. We remain committed to supporting these events year after year, attracting tourism to Gozo while celebrating our culture and traditions.”

Żgugina is considered the first giant puppet of its scale to be built in the Maltese Islands. On the stage of the Gozo International Puppet Festival, she becomes a living storyteller—bringing a local legend to an international platform. Her story tells of a widow whose son is kidnapped by corsairs. She promises to keep a lamp lit in front of the saint if her son returns. The saint emerges from the chapel painting, saves the boy, and the lamp never goes out. In Għarb, Żgugina is set to become a symbol of faith, courage, and our enduring stories.
Also present at the announcement were Għarb Mayor David Apap and Artistic Director and Organiser Jean Paul Mifsud, who thanked the ministry for its support in bringing the festival to life.
A second giant puppet, Fatima, measuring four metres, was also introduced as a tribute to mothers worldwide who have lost their children, particularly in Gaza. Partnered with Żgugina, Fatima reminds audiences that admiration for courage must also be paired with empathy and solidarity.
