A complex rescue operation was carried out in Mellieħa on Tuesday evening after a female climber required urgent medical assistance in the vicinity of the Red Tower.

At around 19:00, Civil Protection Department Malta received the report and immediately deployed rescue teams from Fire Stations 1, 3, and 5. Upon arrival, rescuers were faced with extremely challenging terrain, with the site only accessible on foot.

Two CPD rescuers abseiled down to reach the injured climber, where an initial medical assessment was carried out. Due to the severity of her condition, a helicopter from the Armed Forces of Malta was dispatched to airlift her to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment.

The operation continued as teams used specialised rope rescue techniques to safely assist five other climbers back to a secure area.

Authorities described the rescue as particularly delicate, with operations conducted in complete darkness, increasing both difficulty and risk.

The CPD thanked the AFM, Malta Police Force, and Mater Dei’s Emergency Department for their support.
