Local

A hot and sunny Santa Marija weekend is in store for Malta, with temperatures expected to climb slightly above the seasonal average.

Friday will start off hot and sunny, with light and variable winds and a maximum temperature of 33°C. The heat will intensify over the weekend, with temperatures reaching 34°C on both Saturday and Sunday.

The “feels like” temperature could be around 3°C higher than the actual maximum, while overnight temperatures are expected to remain between 25°C and 26°C.

For this time of year, Malta’s average maximum temperature is 32°C and the average minimum is 23°C, meaning this weekend will be slightly warmer than usual.

Sea temperatures are also running high, currently at around 30°C, approximately 3°C above the seasonal average.

Light winds should make for generally favourable swimming conditions, although winds will become mainly southwesterly on Saturday and Sunday.

Eastern and northeastern-facing bays, including Mellieħa Bay and St Thomas Bay, are likely to be more sheltered.

With strong August sunshine and high temperatures expected, those spending time outdoors are advised to stay hydrated, seek shade during the hottest hours and use adequate sun protection.
