Sandro Grech, a 41 year old father of two who is battling an aggressive form of leukaemia, will be receiving his needed care in the coming days after a successful fundraiser and a generous donation by the Maltese government.

In a post, Abigail said that Sandro is now in a stable condition after several weeks of treatment at Mater Dei Hospital for an infection that had developed.

She explained that this improvement means he is now fit to travel abroad to continue his care.

The family had initially been in advanced discussions with Singapore’s National University Hospital, where Sandro had been accepted for a clinical trial.

However, Borg said it later emerged that the full cost of treatment and hospital fees would be significantly higher than the €500,000 initially indicated.

Despite support from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Consular Services and the Maltese consul in Singapore, the family decided the option was no longer feasible.

Following further research and assistance from the Acute Leukemia Advocacy Network, Sandro has since been accepted for a similar clinical trial in China.

Borg said preparations are now under way for him to travel by air ambulance to Beijing next week.

She also thanked donors, the Prime Minister, the Ministry for Health and the Maltese community for their support.

Last year, the government pledged €250,000 towards Sandro’s treatment, while crowdfunding efforts raised €396,608.
