San Luċjan Set For Major Transformation As Restoration Work Continues

Work has officially begun to remove the old oil storage tanks at San Luċjan in Birżebbuġa, marking another major step towards the regeneration of the former industrial site into a Sustainable Innovation Hub.
A total of 12 tanks, previously used to store heavy fuel oil, are being dismantled. The first tank, weighing around 25 tonnes, has already been removed, with the remaining structures expected to be taken down one by one over the coming months.
Earlier this year, around 1,200 cubic metres of oil-contaminated sludge were removed from the tanks. Extensive work was also carried out on the site's network of pipelines, with each section drained, cleaned and systematically removed. Around 10,000 litres of residual oil were recovered during the process.
Removal of the tanks is expected to continue until around March 2027, followed by the careful removal their foundations, environmental testing and the demolition of the old pump house.
Subject to environmental test results, the full clearance of the facility is expected to be completed during 2027. Meanwhile, the Government is also developing plans for the site's future, including educational, technological and innovation spaces, cultural and recreational areas, green public spaces and family-friendly facilities.
