Rosianne Cutajar Urges For Clear Rules Regarding Surrogacy

Labour MP Rosianne Cutajar sparks conversation surrounding Maltese couples becoming parents through surrogacy abroad, which is not against the law.
She emphasised that no matter what position one takes regarding surrogacy, this is a reality Malta is facing, and therefore, transparent regulations need to be in place to protect both the child and the parents in the situation.
Rosianne Cutajar has recently returned to parliament’s health committee as part of a reshuffle of Labour members on various parliamentary committees.
Speaking to MaltaDaily, Cutajar stated that she brought this topic to light after a woman who is to become a mother via surrogacy contacted her, saying that her workplace is refusing to give her maternity leave since she is not the one carrying the child.
The Labour MP pointed out the inconsistency, noting that fathers, who also do not carry the child, are still entitled to maternity leave.
