Minister for Equality and Civil Rights Rosianne Cutajar has condemned and officially reported a racist comment posted on social media that appears to praise Lassana Cissé’s murderers, saying that “racism, hatred and violence have no place in our society.”

In a Facebook post, Rosianne Cutajar said she had reported a shocking comment that appeared to justify the racial violence against Lassana Cissé, describing the comments as worrying and shameful.

Minister Cutajar stressed that everyone has the right to safety, dignity and respect, regardless of nationality, race or skin colour.

Her comments come as the trial of the men accused of murdering Cissé continues, bringing renewed attention to the case and the wider issue of racism in Malta.

Rosianne Cutajar acknowledged that immigration and its challenges should be discussed, but insisted that this must never be used to justify hatred or violence. She also rejected the idea that racism and violence could be portrayed as acts of patriotism.
