Minister for Social and Affordable Housing, Rodrick Galdes, has responded following a company announcement from Malita Investments PLC. In the announcement, the Board of Directors including the private directors who have served in this role over the past four years categorically denied any allegations that the Minister attempted to involve himself in or influence the management of the company.

Former Labour MEP Marlene Mizzi has accused Minister for Social and Affordable Accommodation Roderick Galdes of political interference at Malita Investments plc. Mizzi, who was removed as Chairperson in May 2024, claims her dismissal followed a confrontation with Galdes over his alleged close ties with company contractors. She says Malita was financially sound under her leadership.

The company, however, has faced financial difficulties, delaying most contractor payments since April 2025 and halting a €44 million social housing project in Luqa. Allegations of fraud have also been raised by contractors owed millions.

Mizzi’s claims have intensified debate over the influence of developers on Maltese politics. Critics argue that reliance on developer funding risks undermining transparency in planning and environmental policies.

ADPD The Green Party called for Minister Galdes’ immediate resignation and an independent investigation into Malita. Meanwhile, the Nationalist Party will request the National Audit Office to review the company’s operations, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in the social housing sector.

The Nationalist Party will ask the National Audit Office to investigate Malita, stressing that the government must ensure transparency in the social housing sector, especially where political influence may be involved.

In response Glades wrote, ‘I do not accept, and will never accept, that anyone should smear me or attempt to tarnish my name with actions or intentions that never occurred. The Board clearly confirms that it has always made its decisions independently and in accordance with the principles of good governance.’

He added, ‘I will continue to present the facts as they are and will not allow anyone to undermine my integrity or the work I carry out with daily diligence.’
