Roberta Metsola Signs Single Market Roadmap To Boost European Competitiveness

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, signed the landmark roadmap for the European Single Market in Nicosia.
Metsola was joined by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, as the country that has the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The signing took place in Nicosia, Cyprus, where EU leaders are meeting for an informal European Council. The agreement, titled "One Europe, One Market," is designed to eliminate economic fragmentation and deliver on citizens' demands for a more streamlined, competitive European economy.
Highlighting the importance of the roadmap, President Metsola underlined the European Parliament’s commitment to rapid legislative action.
President Metsola stated that "this roadmap reflects what the European Parliament has been calling for: A stronger, more competitive and resilient Europe," remarking that "it is ambitious, it strengthens our capacity to withstand shocks, and it provides predictability to our citizens and businesses." She concluded by expressing that "we said we would take bold decisions and we are doing it. This is Europe responding to what it needs."
The President also urged EU leaders to move beyond short-term fixes and focus on long-term structural resilience in view of the ongoing energy challenges. She called for significant investment in European grids and infrastructure to secure the continent's supply, highlighting the "need to go past temporary measures."
With the European Parliament set to adopt its position on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) next week, President Metsola signaled readiness to negotiate with Member States.
President Metsola also welcomed the approval of the €90 billion loan for Ukraine and the implementation of the 20th package of sanctions. She noted that these measures provide the financial assistance and political momentum that the European Parliament has long advocated for. Additionally, she welcomed the prolonged ceasefire in Iran, reaffirming Europe's role as a partner for peace and stability.
