Four Maltese translators working at the European Parliament have successfully completed the institution’s intensive Interpreting Academy programme, aimed at training highly skilled conference interpreters in languages where demand is greatest, including Maltese.

The programme, which serves as the Parliament’s flagship training initiative, involved 20 weeks of full-time preparation. Participants were equipped with advanced interpreting techniques while also gaining a deeper understanding of how the European Parliament operates, ensuring they are fully prepared to work within EU institutions.

During a closing ceremony, Roberta Metsola praised the dedication and commitment shown by the participants throughout the programme. She highlighted the crucial role translators and interpreters play in bridging communication gaps within the European Union.

“What you do as translators and interpreters matters,” Metsola said. “You are the ones who bridge that gap. You turn words into meaning. You make sure that what we say is not just heard, but understood.”

She also emphasised the importance of strengthening the Maltese language at a European level, noting that the work of translators ensures that citizens in Malta and Gozo can follow parliamentary proceedings in their native language. Metsola reaffirmed her commitment to creating more opportunities for the use of Maltese within the institution.

The European Parliament continues to invest in developing new linguistic talent as part of its broader commitment to multilingualism, a core democratic principle of the European Union.
