Taking to social media, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola paid tribute to Rose Vella, the mother of assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

‘She died still waiting for justice for her murdered daughter’, wrote Metsola, marking the third anniversary since her passing.

‘Rose and her entire family have been in my thoughts, particularly these last horrific days as the country live-scrolls through the march of nauseating testimony.’

‘Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered almost a decade ago. Throughout all that time, her family have led a campaign for justice, that they should never have been forced to do. They had to fight for what should be the right of all of us.’

‘Despite it all, it is how Daphne lived that will be remembered. What she stood for. Her wit, her sharp-pen that was always mightier than their swords. Her garden. The pride with which she spoke of her children's achievements. Her investigations. Her analysis and commentary that shaped national agendas.’

‘Throughout these horrible weeks, I think of her’, she continued. ‘Of her family and her three boys forced to become men without her. Her grandchildren who will never know her. Her father still standing up.’

‘And particularly of her mother, Rose. Of her quiet stoicism, of her courage under unimaginable pressure, of her purple scarves and how a soft-spoken grandmother could embody the best of our country.’
