Today marks four years since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

On February 24th 2022, Russia launched its full-scale invasion and the largest conflict in Europe since World War II. Despite its initial goal of a swift victory, the war still drags on.

In a post on social media, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola marked the fourth anniversary of the war, commending Ukrainians for their unbreakable courage.

‘Four years of Ukrainians standing tall under immense pressure… of a nation that refuses to yield… of Europe steadfast in its support’, wrote Metsola.

‘History will remember their bravery and the solidarity of those who stood with them.’

Casualty numbers, including fatalities and those injured, vary wildly, with both countries presenting figures that amplify enemy losses while downplaying their own, Al Jazeera reported this month.

Ukraine’s General Staff estimated that Russian casualties climbed to just over 1.25 million, with the Centre for Strategic & International Studies agreeing with the number.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that over 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed, with CSIS estimated up to 600,000 casualties and as many as 140,000 deaths.

As of December 31st 2025, a total of 4.35 million non-EU citizens who fled Ukraine had temporary protection status in the EU. 2,495 of these found refuge in Malta.
