ROBERTA METSOLA CALL FOR FREEDOM IN IRAN FOLLOWING KHAMENEI’S DEATH

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has issued a powerful statement following the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, calling for an end to decades of dictatorship and oppression in the country.
In her address, Metsola highlighted the suffering endured by generations of Iranians under the regime, including those murdered, executed, forcibly disappeared, and exiled. She paid tribute to political prisoners, victims of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and families torn apart by violence and fear. Her statement also referenced the death of Jina Mahsa Amini, emphasising the continued struggle for women’s rights and freedom.
“After 47 years, it must be time for freedom,” Metsola wrote. She called for the Iranian people to finally live “in light rather than remain shrouded in darkness,” underscoring that the fight for liberty in Iran is existential, not political.
The European Parliament President’s message reflects growing international calls for democratic reform in Iran and expresses solidarity with those who have suffered under decades of authoritarian rule.
