In an exclusive interview with MaltaDaily, Prime Minister Robert Abela was questioned on how his administration intends to ensure that Maltese taxpayers’ money is managed responsibly.

The issue was raised against the backdrop of several reported financial scandals and inconsistencies in state assets in recent years.

Abela was asked who, if anyone, could take accountability for these alleged inconsistencies if they were proven to be true.

In response, the Prime Minister highlighted what he described as unprecedented levels of financial investment under his administration. He pointed to billion-euro initiatives launched during the pandemic, as well as significant infrastructural projects aimed at improving Malta, as evidence of his government’s fiscal responsibility.

“Mention one example in the past six years where someone can cast even the smallest doubt that there was some kind of irregularity or misuse of public funds, at least in one aspect,” Abela remarked.

He reiterated that no irregularities have been reported, stressing that every measure is being taken to ensure transparency and accountability. Abela added that all those involved in procurement, including contractors, had worked in service of the country.

“When it comes to public funds,” he said, “we administrate them not as if they were our personal funds, but better.”

The Prime Minister concluded that these results reflect his government’s wider economic strategy, focused on stability, growth, and the safeguarding of national resources.
