Robert Abela Visits Alternative Learning Programme school In Paola

Prime Minister Robert Abela has visited the Alternative Learning Programme (ALP) school in Paola, where students are offered vocational training alongside core academic subjects.
Accompanied by his wife, Dr Lydia Abela, and Education Ministry Permanent Secretary Matthew Vella, the Prime Minister met students and educators and observed practical training sessions.
The school offers 16 vocational subjects, including engineering, welding, mechanics, electrical training, plumbing, hairdressing, hospitality and agriculture. Students choose two vocational subjects while continuing to study Maltese, English, Mathematics and ICT.
The programme also includes six weeks of work experience in industry, helping students develop practical skills and prepare for employment or further studies at institutions such as MCAST and the Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS).
During the visit, Abela highlighted the importance of providing different educational pathways that reflect students’ abilities and interests. He also referred to ongoing discussions about establishing a vocational secondary school to offer students a clearer route towards practical learning and skills-based careers.
The Prime Minister also highlighted measures aimed at supporting students, including an increase in the annual funds available to school heads to assist students in need, from €10,000 to €30,000.
He added that the government is continuing to introduce calming spaces in schools, designed to help students manage their emotions, reduce stress and improve concentration.
Abela said the aim was to ensure that every student has access to educational opportunities, regardless of their family circumstances or individual needs.
