Robert Abela Says Government Working to Strengthen Malta’s Electricity Grid

Prime Minister Robert Abela has said the government is taking measures to strengthen Malta’s electricity system following recent power outages that affected families and businesses.

Speaking during an interview with ONE, Abela said households and businesses should not be held responsible for the inconvenience caused by the disruptions. He attributed increased pressure on the electricity distribution system to extreme temperatures and the effects of climate change.

Abela said the government has already invested €161 million in strengthening the national electricity grid and that infrastructure works will be accelerated to improve the system’s resilience.

He also pointed to the planned second interconnector, which he said will further strengthen Malta’s energy supply and provide additional security for the country’s electricity system.

The Prime Minister said the government would continue supporting families and businesses through energy subsidies, particularly amid international uncertainty and rising global energy costs.

He also stressed the importance of continued investment in clean energy, digitalisation and infrastructure, saying these measures would help Malta respond to future challenges.

Abela said the government is determined to ensure that incidents such as the recent electricity disruptions do not become recurring events, while continuing efforts to improve the reliability and resilience of Malta’s electricity network.
