In the wake of Malta’s formal recognition of the Palestinian state, the Maltese delegation has remained active on the international stage, contributing to key debates and holding high-level meetings.

At a UN session on LGBTIQ rights, Prime Minister Robert Abela reiterated Malta’s commitment to equality, paying particular attention to the struggles faced by LGBTIQ youth.

Abela emphasised that while the UN Charter enshrines universal rights, many young people still endure bullying and exclusion due to their gender.

Citing Malta’s progress through inclusive education, community initiatives, and the creation of safe spaces, he highlighted ongoing challenges such as online hate speech and limited access to mental health support.

Abela urged international cooperation to ensure all young people can live with dignity and pride.

The Prime Minister also addressed the “Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient Global Economy” Summit, where he underscored the need for fairer lending practices to assist developing countries.

Stressing that economic aid must directly improve people’s daily lives, Abela reaffirmed Malta’s responsibility to advocate on behalf of less-advantaged nations.

In New York, Abela also met with an Amazon delegation led by Vice President Susan Pointer and AWS Director Franco Spicciariello.

Discussions centred on Malta’s Vision 2050, which Amazon recognised as closely aligned with its long-term strategy.

With AWS already serving Maltese clients, the tech giant expressed strong interest in expanding collaboration, particularly in areas such as start-up support and digital skills, while commending Malta’s strides in digital innovation and regulatory frameworks.
