Prime Minister and Labour leader Robert Abela has unveiled major healthcare proposals ahead of the general election on 30 May, including an extension of the Intensive Care Unit and 150 new beds at Mater Dei Hospital.

Speaking during a political event, Abela said the proposals form part of Labour’s vision to strengthen Malta’s healthcare system and prepare the country’s main hospital for future demand.

Among the key pledges is the expansion of Mater Dei’s Intensive Care Unit, aimed at increasing critical care capacity and ensuring the hospital is better equipped to respond to emergencies and complex medical cases.

Abela also proposed the addition of 150 new beds to ease pressure on wards and improve patient care across the hospital.

The proposals form part of a wider healthcare plan which also includes doubling the size of Mater Dei’s Emergency Department, with preparatory works already completed and the tender awarded.

He also pledged that relocating outpatient services outside the hospital would create space for a dedicated Mother and Child Unit, featuring specialised paediatric operating theatres, a larger neonatal and paediatric intensive care section, delivery suites and antenatal clinics.

Abela said the proposals underline Labour’s commitment to continued investment in healthcare infrastructure if re-elected later this month.
