Addressing the crowd at Sannat Square in Gozo, Prime Minister Robert Abela pledged that within the next five years, all schools in Gozo will be rebuilt to ensure that children receive the highest standard of education in a modern and inspiring environment.

The pledge builds on recent government investment in the island’s educational infrastructure. In April 2025, the Prime Minister, alongside Education Minister Clifton Grima and Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri, inaugurated two major schools within the Rabat educational campus: Sir Arturo Mercieca Primary School and Agius de Soldanis Middle School.

The €18 million project has created a unique educational hub, incorporating a childcare centre, sports facilities, and an archaeological interpretation centre built around Punic tombs discovered during construction. The primary school includes 16 classrooms, 10 kindergarten classes, and specialised spaces for science, IT, and the arts, all set within an 8,000 square metre site, with 3,000 square metres dedicated to sports and recreation. Together, the primary and kindergarten facilities can accommodate around 650 students.

The adjacent middle school has also been significantly expanded and modernised, now featuring 30 refurbished classrooms, science laboratories, multi-purpose halls, a gymnasium, and dedicated spaces for creative subjects such as art, music, and drama.

During the inauguration, Dr Abela described the project as an investment in the aspirations of Gozitan children, emphasising the government’s vision of a modern and inclusive education system. Minister Grima highlighted the importance of creating the right environment for students to develop their abilities and achieve their ambitions, while Minister Camilleri noted that the project reflects a broader commitment to strengthening Gozo’s educational sector.

The pledge comes ahead of the general election scheduled for 30 May, with political parties intensifying their campaigns across the country.

In Gozo, the electoral landscape is expected to be closely contested, particularly on the 13th District, where Gozitan Opposition Leader Alex Borg is considered a strong contender. In this context, the Labour Party is placing emphasis on proposals and commitments aimed at Gozo, as it seeks to consolidate support on the island.
