The National Football Centre in Ta’ Qali is providing Malta’s national football team with advanced facilities to support preparation, training and recovery ahead of important international fixtures, including Sunday’s match against Andorra.

Prime Minister Robert Abela and Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri visited the centre while the national squad was training, where they met with the players, coach Emilio De Leo, technical staff and Malta Football Association representatives.

During the visit, they were briefed on how the facility has changed the team’s daily preparations since its inauguration. Players and staff highlighted how having training pitches, a gymnasium, physiotherapy facilities and recovery areas in one location has improved efficiency and allowed for more focused preparation.

The centre’s sports science facilities also allow staff to monitor players’ physical condition, workload and performance, helping tailor training according to individual needs. Dedicated recovery areas and physiotherapy services support players in maintaining fitness and reducing injury risks, particularly during demanding international periods.

The facility also includes spaces for tactical preparation, including meeting rooms and presentation areas where technical staff can carry out video analysis and team discussions.

Malta goalkeeper Henry Bonello said the centre has improved accessibility by bringing all necessary facilities together in one place. Coach Emilio De Leo said the investment has also strengthened team unity by allowing players and staff to work together in the same environment.

Malta Football Association President Bjorn Vassallo said the project allows the association to look towards further ambitious developments, including the proposed National Stadium project.

The National Football Centre, funded mainly through the National Development and Social Fund and supported by a Malta Development Bank loan, serves as the technical and logistical base for Malta’s national teams.
