At a rally organised by the Partit Laburista in Żejtun marking the first day of the electoral campaign, Prime Minister and Labour leader Robert Abela outlined a wide set of economic and social measures alongside new policy proposals.

He said recent years had been marked by record economic growth and major social initiatives, including substantial tax cuts, increased children’s allowances, and continued investment in green and open spaces.

He added that Malta had successfully faced major challenges such as the pandemic, global inflation and international instability through national unity and stability.

According to him, the economy has grown by almost a quarter since his first mandate, while Malta has achieved its lowest unemployment rate on record and one of the highest employment levels in Europe.

He also highlighted record household savings and a reduced reliance on social assistance.

Abela then presented the first set of proposals in the party’s electoral manifesto, structured around five key pillars.

These include tax exemptions for young people entering work or starting businesses, with income up to €30,000 exempt from tax for three years.

Housing initiatives include the My First Home scheme, where the Government would cover up to a quarter of a mortgage, and the Our Next Home programme, which supports growing families with grants of up to €40,000 in Gozo or UCA areas and €15,000 in Malta.

Further measures include expanded parental leave, financial support of up to €5,000 per child at birth, and pension increases of at least €50 per week over five years. The rally also featured Franco Mercieca and Naomi Cachia.
