Robert Abela Confirms That New Mental Health Hospital and Emergency Expansion Tender Has Been Awarded

In Mellieħa, Prime Minister Robert Abela has confirmed that the tender for the construction of a new acute mental health hospital at Mater Dei Hospital and the expansion of the Emergency Department has been awarded, paving the way for one of the largest investments in Malta’s mental health sector in recent years.
The new facility forms part of the government’s wider plan to modernise mental healthcare services and gradually replace acute psychiatric services currently operating from Mount Carmel Hospital.
Speaking about the development, Abela confirmed that the tender process has now been concluded and awarded, allowing work on the facility to move forward.
