Robert Abela Announces Reductions In Electricity And Water Service Charges For Fishermen

During a visit to Marsaxlokk, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced significant reductions in the charges associated with the use of electricity and water service pillars for fishing vessels.

For full-time and part-time fishermen operating vessels registered under the MFA and MFB categories, electricity service charges will be reduced by 55%, while water service charges will be reduced by 57%. Electricity charges for other vessels registered under the MFC category will also be reduced by 17%.

These measures were announced during a visit to Marsaxlokk, where the Prime Minister, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Sharlo Camilleri, and the Director General for Fisheries and Aquaculture within the same ministry, Bjorn Azzopardi, held an informal meeting with a number of fishermen.

The Prime Minister said that these reductions are intended to ease the operational burden on fishermen and provide them with better conditions to continue working, investing, and strengthening their economic activity.

It was also announced that the Government will begin discussions with fishermen's organisations so that a building currently in a state of abandonment at Xatt is-Sajjieda (Fishermen's Wharf) can be transferred to the Malta Food Agency. The building will then be repurposed into an efficient facility that reflects the sector's real needs. Among other features, it will include refrigerated storage facilities for fishermen.

The Government reaffirmed its commitment to continue supporting fishermen while preserving Malta's fishing tradition and building a fishing sector that is increasingly competitive and sustainable.

Prime Minister Abela was also accompanied by the Minister for Local Government and Public Works, Alison Zerafa Civelli, on a visit to the Marsaxlokk Local Council offices, where they met with Mayor Steven Grech and local councillors to discuss the locality's needs and priorities.
