During a mass rally in Gozo ahead of the upcoming election, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced plans to increase connectivity between Malta and Gozo through a new Air Taxi service.

“Inżidu l-konnettività permezz ta’ servizz ta’ Air Taxi bejn Għawdex u Malta,” Abela told supporters during the political event, outlining the proposal as part of the government’s vision for Gozo’s future infrastructure and accessibility.

The announcement revives a long-discussed concept of an air link between the sister islands, with several attempts having taken place over the past decades.

The most notable service operated between 1990 and 2004, when helicopter flights connected Malta International Airport to the heliport in Xewkija, Gozo. Operated by Malta Air Charter, the service reduced travel time between the islands to around 10 minutes and was particularly popular among business travellers and tourists.

Following the closure of the helicopter service, another operator briefly attempted to continue the route in 2005 before operations stopped once again due to financial challenges.

In 2007, Harbour Air Malta also introduced seaplane services between Valletta’s Grand Harbour and Mġarr Harbour in Gozo. The scenic flights attracted both locals and tourists but were eventually discontinued in 2012.

Over the years, multiple governments and private operators revisited proposals for improved air connectivity between Malta and Gozo, including helicopter links, seaplanes, and even short-runway aircraft operations.

Abela’s latest proposal now places the idea of an air taxi service back into the national spotlight as political campaigning ahead of the election continues.
