Robert Abela Announces 100 Gozo Proposals, Including €1,000 Grants For Every Worker Undergoing Upskilling

Prime Minister Robert Abela revisited and expanded on a wide range of previously announced proposals for Gozo during a mass political rally held on the island this evening ahead of the upcoming general election campaign.
While many of the measures had already been revealed in recent weeks, Abela used the rally to explain the proposals further and position them as part of Labour’s long-term vision for Gozo.
Among the headline pledges was a plan to make the Gozo Channel ferry free for both Maltese and Gozitan passengers travelling on foot between the two islands.
Abela also reiterated plans for an Air Taxi service between Malta and Gozo aimed at increasing connectivity, alongside the introduction of the Tallinja On Demand service in Gozo.
Infrastructure featured heavily throughout the speech, with the Prime Minister stating that the government aims to complete its programme of 100 new residential roads in Gozo within the next three years. He said works have already begun on 13 roads within just a few months.
On energy, Abela again pledged a new interconnector between Malta and Gozo to strengthen the island’s electricity supply and improve energy security.
Education was another major focus, with plans to modernise all schools in Gozo over the next five years as part of continued investment in educational infrastructure.
The Prime Minister also spoke about the creation of a new centre for art, design, and creativity in Gozo, aimed at supporting local artists while strengthening and renewing Gozitan identity.
Meanwhile, all funds collected through Gozo’s eco-contribution scheme paid by visitors would remain invested in Gozo itself under the proposal, with the money directed towards embellishment and improvement projects across the island.
Abela further highlighted financial support for businesses in Gozo, pledging €1,000 for every worker undergoing upskilling or reskilling initiatives.
Healthcare also featured prominently, with the government promising a new robotic pharmacy at Gozo General Hospital to prepare chemotherapy treatment directly in Gozo, allowing patients to receive the service on the island instead of travelling to Malta.
The proposals form part of Labour’s wider electoral vision for Gozo ahead of the next general election.
