Political leaders Robert Abela and Alex Borg have paid heartfelt tributes to Karin Grech on the 48th anniversary of her tragic murder, remembering the innocent teenager whose life was cut short by a letter bomb in 1977.

Alex Borg described Karin’s death as a stark reminder of the devastating cost paid by innocent people when hatred and violence replace dialogue and respect. He said her memory should strengthen Malta’s commitment to a society where differences are never resolved through violence, and where justice, peace and human dignity are safeguarded. Borg added that Karin’s killing, carried out at the height of political division, remains a painful symbol of the consequences of national discord.

Prime Minister Robert Abela also commemorated Karin Grech and visited her tombstone, saying that together with the Labour Party administration he honoured her memory and reflected on the importance of unity. He stressed that from such a dark episode in Malta’s past, the country must continue to learn the value of cohesion and mutual respect.

Both leaders also extended thoughts to Karin’s parents, who have since passed away, as the nation once again paused to remember a life lost too soon and a wound that remains deeply felt nearly five decades later.
