The Palestinian flag was raised in Swieqi on Monday, marking Malta’s formal recognition of Palestinian statehood.

The ceremony at the newly established Palestinian embassy was attended by Prime Minister Robert Abela and Opposition Leader Alex Borg, alongside diplomats, former presidents, and members of the public.

Both leaders addressed the significance of the occasion. Abela called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and reiterated Malta’s support for a two-state solution, describing it as the only path to lasting peace.

Borg, in a statement after the event, said the Nationalist Party had long urged Malta to recognise the State of Palestine. He added that a two-state solution remains the only route to achieving peace and security for both Israel and Palestine.

The two leaders were welcomed by Ambassador Fadi Hanania and Suha Arafat, widow of the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

Among those present were several children from Gaza receiving medical treatment in Malta, including 14-year-old Ibrahim Wishah, who lost his leg in the conflict.

Abela referred to him warmly, saying, “Where is my hero? I mentioned you at the United Nations.”
