Road Traffic Accidents Decreased In Malta, Says NSO

Road traffic accidents decreased in Malta during the fourth quarter of 2025, according to the National Statistics Office (NSO).

A total of 3,694 traffic accidents were reported between October and December, representing a 6.7% decrease compared to the same period in 2024.

The Northern Harbour district recorded the highest number of cases, with 1,200 accidents, accounting for 32.5% of the total.

Road traffic casualties also declined by 10.8% to 332. Of these, 103 people were grievously injured, including 60 drivers, 12 passengers and 31 pedestrians, cyclists or others.

Two drivers sustained fatal injuries, one fewer fatality than in the corresponding quarter of 2024.

Overall, 65.1% of those grievously injured were male, while the two fatalities involved one male and one female. Persons aged between 41 and 59 accounted for 28.6% of all casualties.

Passenger cars were involved in 48.5% of casualties, followed by motorcycles at 40.1% and goods carrying vehicles at 6.3%.

Accidents between vehicles accounted for 59.6% of casualties.

In terms of locality, Ħal Qormi registered the highest number of accidents with 202 cases, followed by Birkirkara and Il Marsa.

Nationally, fatalities in 2025 totalled 18, six more than in 2024, despite overall decreases in both injury and non injury accidents throughout the year.
