ROAD SAFETY AWARDS PUT SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENT CREATIVITY

The Malta Road Safety Council, in collaboration with the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, has presented awards and certificates of participation to schools and students who took part in a writing and design competition focused on road safety awareness.
The initiative featured two main competitions. Primary school students were invited to write a short composition on road safety, while secondary school students were tasked with designing a logo concept for the Malta Road Safety Council. The competitions form part of ongoing efforts to increase awareness about road safety among children from a young age.
A total of 24 schools participated in the initiative, including eight primary schools and 16 secondary and middle schools. Each participating school received a certificate of participation together with a €200 book voucher, while all students who took part were awarded a digital certificate. Educational prizes were also presented to students whose submissions were deemed outstanding.
Addressing students and parents present at the event, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett thanked participants for their involvement, describing it as a clear indication of the importance they attach to road safety. He noted that children often convey some of the most powerful messages in their own unique way and stressed the need to foster a culture of respect on the country’s roads from an early age.
Chairperson of the Malta Road Safety Council, Dr Therese Bajada, explained that the Road Safety Awards for Schools were conceived around a year ago as part of a decision to involve children more directly in educational road safety campaigns. She said the submissions received demonstrated that children have clear views on mobility, including walking and cycling.
The Road Safety Awards for Schools were organised by the Malta Road Safety Council with the support of the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Transport Malta and the Office of the Commissioner for Children.
