Rising Cost Of Living Sparks Protests Across Europe Amid Rising Fuel Prices

Thousands of people have taken to the streets across Europe to protest against the rising cost of living, with France experiencing some of the most serious unrest in recent years.
On Saturday, demonstrators across France voiced concerns over rising fuel prices, declining public services, education standards and the affordability of everyday essentials. The French Interior Ministry reported at least 272 arrests following violent incidents in cities including Paris, Marseille and Lyon.
Protests also took place in Belgium, Portugal and Italy. In Lisbon, tens of thousands marched over housing affordability and rising living costs, while demonstrations in Italy focused on increasing expenses.
Malta has also felt the impact of the rising cost of living, but government subsidies on fuel and energy prices have helped cushion households against some of these pressures.
The European Commission has noted that Malta has kept retail electricity and fuel prices frozen since the energy crisis, with household electricity prices among the lowest in the EU. However, lower energy costs do not mean Maltese households are unaffected by rising food, housing and other essential expenses.
The demonstrations across Europe highlight growing public concern over affordability, public services and the financial pressures facing households.
