An additional €2 million has also been announced for Grade 1 and Grade 2 Scheduled Buildings located outside Urban Conservation Areas across all regions of Malta and Gozo.

The Minister for Gozo and Planning, Clint Camilleri, has announced the opening of the “Restore Your Home and the Village” scheme for the Southern Region, with a total allocation of €5 million dedicated to the restoration, conservation and maintenance of properties within the region. The scheme is open to private homeowners, NGOs and businesses located in eligible localities forming part of this region.

The Minister explained that, following the launch of the scheme in the Western Region last month, and as previously indicated, it is being rolled out gradually across all regions of Malta and Gozo. He expressed satisfaction at the strong interest generated by the overall €30 million scheme. Above all, he emphasised that this initiative continues to strengthen the Government’s commitment to investing directly in communities in order to safeguard and enhance Malta’s architectural and historical heritage. Through these grants, property owners, voluntary organisations and businesses are being given the opportunity to restore and conserve buildings of value while preserving the authentic character of Maltese and Gozitan towns and villages.

The Southern Region includes Ħal Qormi, Ħal Għaxaq, Żejtun, Santa Venera, Birżebbuġa, Marsascala, Marsaxlokk, Gudja, Ħamrun, Ħal Luqa and Marsa.

Eligible applicants may benefit from the following maximum grants:

Up to €15,000 for restoration works on any type of property located within an Urban Conservation Area

Up to €100,000 for Grade 1 Scheduled Buildings situated within Urban Conservation Areas

Up to €50,000 for Grade 2 Scheduled Buildings within Urban Conservation Areas

‘Restore Your Home And The Village’ Scheme Opens For Southern Region

Applications for this phase of the scheme opened on 25 February 2026 and will remain open until 4 March 2026. As in the case of the Western Region, applications will be evaluated strictly in the order in which they are submitted.

Minister Camilleri also announced an additional allocation of €2 million for the restoration of Grade 1 and Grade 2 Scheduled Buildings located outside Urban Conservation Areas across all regions of Malta and Gozo. He stated that this initiative is specifically aimed at structures of architectural and historical value situated beyond established UCAs. Applications under this measure will open on 9 March 2026.

The Executive Chairman of the Planning Authority, Johann Buttigieg, said that with €5 million allocated to the Southern Region, a clear message is being sent that Malta’s built heritage deserves the attention and investment it requires. He appealed to residents, NGOs and businesses to apply promptly in order to benefit from this opportunity. He added that the additional €2 million investment in scheduled structures across Malta and Gozo further demonstrates the Authority’s commitment to protecting the architecture and history that shape the country’s identity. Together, he said, it is possible to build a future in which Malta’s heritage is not only preserved but strengthened for future generations.

The Minister concluded by stating that these initiatives form part of the ongoing commitment of the Government and the Planning Authority within the Ministry to support property owners, safeguard the national architectural heritage and preserve the distinct Maltese character of the built environment.

Applications may be submitted online via the Planning Authority website or in person. They will be evaluated by the Heritage Planning Unit and the Development Fund Committee.
