RESTORATION WORKS UNDERWAY AT GĦAR LAPSI FOLLOWING STORM DAMAGE
Local

The Public Works Department has begun major restoration works at Għar Lapsi following severe damage caused by Storm Harry, which impacted the popular coastal site with powerful waves and erosion.

The multi-phase project aims to rebuild damaged infrastructure, improve safety, and enhance the area’s long-term resilience against harsh weather conditions. Authorities have stressed that the works will not only repair the damage but also upgrade the site’s accessibility and aesthetics for future generations.

The first phase focuses on repairing the ramp and pathways leading to the bay. Around 90 cubic metres of concrete have already been used to fill a large void created by the storm’s impact. Preparatory works are also underway to improve seating areas and provide safer, more accessible steps for visitors. A small 12-metre pier, which was completely destroyed, will also be rebuilt to restore safe sea access, while debris and displaced concrete have been cleared from the beach.

The second phase will address stabilisation of the western cliff face, which suffered significant erosion and a rock collapse estimated at around 60 tonnes. Geological studies have identified additional at-risk areas, with technical solutions currently being finalised ahead of works expected to begin in June.

Subsequent phases include the reconstruction of the slipway, installation of protective rock armour, and major site embellishment works such as new paving, underground cabling, railings, and CCTV systems.

Officials from the Parliamentary Secretariat for Public Works have described the project as a long-term investment in restoring Għar Lapsi, ensuring it remains safe, accessible, and sustainable for decades to come.
