Restoration of St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral Bells Completed in Valletta

The Anglican Pro-Cathedral of St. Paul in Valletta has celebrated the completion of its bell restoration, alongside the refurbishment of its historic bell tower, a project funded through European and community support.
Prime Minister Robert Abela, speaking during the inauguration ceremony last night, stressed the significance of the building: “This building forms part of the identity of our capital city and must therefore be preserved and safeguarded.”
Highlighting the decades of exposure to natural elements that necessitated urgent restoration, Abela expressed satisfaction at the project’s completion.
He noted that approximately €4.2 million of European funds were allocated by the Government for the works, with additional support provided by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector and the National Social Development Fund.
He also acknowledged the HSBC Malta Foundation’s contribution to the bell restoration, adding: “This is what happens when we work together, Government and the community, hand in hand, to safeguard what belongs to all of us.”
The Prime Minister framed the project as part of Valletta’s wider regeneration, which has seen over €24 million invested in public spaces, educational facilities, and historic landmarks, including the Grandmaster’s Palace.
He added that the Pro-Cathedral will once again feature in the annual Notte Bianca festival, offering the public a chance to engage with Malta’s rich heritage.
