Restoration Of Għajn Tuffieħa Tower Completed

The Ministry for Culture, the Arts and Local Government has successfully concluded consolidation and restoration works on the historic Għajn Tuffieħa Tower.
The Department of Restoration and Preservation oversaw the project, giving new life to the tower, which was built in 1637 as part of a series of coastal fortifications commissioned by Grand Master Lascaris to strengthen Malta’s defences against corsair raids.

Minister for Culture, the Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici said, “Preserving our historical heritage remains a priority for this Government. Għajn Tuffieħa Tower is not only a testament to our country’s defensive history but also a symbol of our coastal identity. Thanks to the interventions carried out by the Department of Restoration and Preservation, we are ensuring that this tower stands tall for future generations, in a safe and dignified condition. This project reflects our ongoing commitment to protecting and renewing sites that preserve Malta’s collective memory.”
He also expressed his gratitude to the workers of the Lands Authority for their full cooperation throughout the entire restoration process.

Għajn Tuffieħa Tower sustained extensive damage in 2023 due to continuous rainfall and strong winds caused by Cyclone Helios. The storm severely affected the upper central section of the tower’s western façade. The Lands Authority immediately intervened by erecting scaffolding around the tower to prevent further deterioration.
