Restoration work has officially started on the Chapel of Our Lady of Grace in Qrendi, one of six chapels found within the locality. The chapel is located along the road leading to the megalithic temples, close to the Chapel dedicated to Saint Matthew in the area known as Tal-Maqluba.

The Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government Owen Bonnici, during a site visit while works were underway, said the restoration is an important step in safeguarding and preserving Malta’s historical heritage. He emphasised that a community’s cultural identity is strengthened through projects of this kind, which bring new life to historic buildings.

Originally dedicated to Our Lady of Victory and built in 1685, the chapel sustained damage during the war, with parts of it later rebuilt.

The project focuses on the restoration and conservation of this simple yet culturally significant rural chapel, known for its traditional architectural form and its continuous presence within Qrendi’s religious and historical landscape.

The restoration is based on established conservation practices aimed at retaining as much of the original structure as possible while ensuring long term structural stability. All works will be carried out using materials and methods that respect the original construction and maintain compatibility with the historic fabric.

Restoration works will be carried out by professional staff from the Department of Restoration and Preservation and are expected to take around six months, with the Department covering all costs.

Present during the visit were Mayor David Schembri, members of the Qrendi Local Council, and Parish Priest Father Mario Said.
