Repair And Regeneration Work In San Tumas Area, Marsaskala

The Government has continued to invest in the San Tumas area in Wied il-Għajn to enhance and beautify this popular site, particularly for residents in the south of Malta.
In recent years, extensive work has been carried out on several maritime structures that had fallen into an advanced state of deterioration, including the complete reconstruction of three piers.

Over the past months, attention has turned to improving public walkways and access, ensuring a better experience for all visitors.
In recent weeks, coastal protection and reinforcement works have begun on the inner side of the area towards Munxar. Rocks are being placed to form a revetment against rough weather.
Sections that were previously reinforced held up well during Storm Harry, while unprotected areas suffered some erosion, with parts of the coast receding several metres.
Work continues to safeguard the road and surrounding infrastructure. In addition, Infrastructure Malta, after securing planning permits, will build new public toilets to serve those visiting the area.
The Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, Chris Bonett, explained that the storm caused serious damage to a sea wall constructed decades ago, which was completely destroyed.

The damage is irreparable and the wall will need to be rebuilt. He noted that as weather conditions stabilise, repairs have begun and ongoing projects are returning to a faster pace, citing works at M’sida Creek, the Marsaskala promenade, and Buġibba square as examples.
Minister Bonett confirmed that the San Tumas works are expected to be completed by summer, allowing visitors to enjoy the area in a safer and more attractive environment.
