‘Renewed Hope’: PM Robert Abela Welcomes US-Iran Ceasefire Deal

In a statement on social media, Prime Minister Robert Abela welcomed the cease-fire reached overnight between the United States and Iran.
This is ‘an encouraging development’, wrote Abela, ‘offering people in the region a much needed moment of relief and renewed hope.’
‘Malta remains firmly committed to diplomacy and will continue to advocate for peace, dialogue, and stability at every opportunity.’
On his part, Minister for Foreign Affairs Ian Borg also welcomed the development, saying:
‘Malta welcomes the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran. We thank the mediation efforts of Pakistan and all partners involved in the negotiations.’
‘May this be the first step leading towards a comprehensive and long-lasting resolution on all issues for the much-needed peace and stability in the region. Diplomacy, dialogue and de-escalation must prevail on all fronts.’
The United States and Iran have agreed to a conditional two week ceasefire, reached in the immediate aftermath of a stark warning from Donald Trump that “a whole civilisation will die tonight” if Iran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The agreement is explicitly temporary and designed to facilitate negotiations.
